We are citizens of New Smyrna Beach that are concerned about the lack of action from our government regarding beach restoration. This site will shed some light on that subject.
We are concerned about the economic impact along with the loss of recreational resources. Dune restoration has begun and will continue until the new dune is finished.
The sand will come from Rattlesnake Island and will begin at about Sapphire road and move south building the new artificial dune as the equipment moves.
But this is a very temporary solution. We need a long term solution - beach restoration is the answer. This is a process that will restore height and width to our critically eroded beaches. Too many variables impact our beaches to rely solely on Nature to replenish our sands in a timely fashion. Beach erosion threatens the very resource that residents and visitors enjoy. Please review the “FAQ” section for more information and history.
The beach restoration is still in the planning process. Progress has been made, the sand has been found off shore, there are meetings being held to inform and to gain input from all of us. The real chore will be ahead of us -- finding the money to pay for the restoration.
Provide your support by informing the Volusia County Council that you are in favor of “Saving and Maintaining” one of our primary resources – The Beach. It is important that the County Council realizes that the majority of the community supports this project and realizes the potential economic loss could cause a negative ripple effect across many local industries.
In the "Documents" section, you will find presentations, emails and just about any document that is related to getting our beach back. This section will be updated frequently. Check out the "What can I do" section, and find out how to send an email to our elected officials.
We will be updating this site often, come back to get information about meetings, both upcoming and past. To get information as we get it, register to be included in our email notification list. You will receive emails letting you know when there are meetings, beach updates and notices about changes to the web site.
We will maintain this site, but we need input from you, please send us a message or fill out the contact us form. There are a number of great articles on the resources page.
